Robert Vort

Robert Vort, 73, of Morris Township died Sept. 3, 2017. He lived in Maplewood and Hackensack before moving to his latest residence a month ago.

Following a judicial clerkship, Mr. Vort spent his entire career in the private practice of law. 

He graduated from Columbia University School of Law in 1968 and from Wharton School of Finance and Commerce at the University of Pennsylvania in 1965. 

He was a member of the American, New Jersey state, and Bergen County bar associations. Within the American Bar Association, he was a member of the Section of Litigation and its Trial Evidence Committee. He was also a member of the Council of Appellate Lawyers of the Judicial Administration Division. He served as a member of the Council’s executive board and as chairman of its Rules Committee, which examined the statutes and rules governing appeals in the federal court system and issued a report to the Supreme Court’s Advisory Committee on Appellate Practice. 

He served as chairman of the Federal Practice Committee of the Bergen County Bar Association and as vice chair of the Appellate Practices Study Committee of the New Jersey State Bar Association; he also served as chairman of the Essex County Bar Association’s Equity Jurisprudence Committee. He authored several chapters to the first and current editions of the New Jersey Appellate Practices Manual, and spoke about appellate practice for the NJ Institute of Continuing Legal Education and Bergen County Bar Association.

He retained his status as “Super Lawyer,” a rating system issued by Thomson Reuters.

He was a member of Beth Or.

He is survived by three daughters, Hannah Krupp Vort of Mahwah, Rebecca Doede of Queens, and Abigail Bittker of Darien, Conn.; his son, Joel Hornstein of Walnut Creek, Calif.; a sister, Rose Polk of Palm City, Fla.; and eight grandchildren. 

Services were held Sept. 5 with arrangements by Goldstein Funeral Chapel, Edison. Memorial contributions may be made to American Red Cross.
