Ruth Shipman

Ruth Shipman (Marech), 84, of Whippany died April 7, 2016. Born in Newark, she lived in Orange, in Springfield for almost 50 years, and then in West Orange for 10 years before moving to Whippany two years ago. 

Mrs. Shipman served as an elementary school teacher for over 30 years in Hillside. 

She earned a BA in education from Rutgers University’s Newark College of Arts and Sciences after attending Newark State Teacher’s College, New York University, and Jersey City State Teacher’s College. She received her teacher’s certification from the State of New Jersey. 

She was a member of the Hillside Education Association and the New Jersey Retired Teachers Education Association. She was the recipient of the Governor’s Teacher Recognition Award in 1987 and a member of the Honorary Teacher’s Sorority, Alpha Delta Kappa. 

A life member of the Hillside-Union chapter of Hadassah, she served as president, fund-raising vice president, raffle chair, and donor chair, and was selected Woman of the Year in December 2006. She was a longtime member of Temple Beth Ahm Yisrael of Springfield and its sisterhood as well as its Bikkur Cholim Outreach Society. She also served as president of the Jewish War Veterans Ladies Auxiliary. 

She is survived by her husband, Richard; her son, Marc (Cathy) of Warren; two daughters, Robin Shipman of Downington, Pa., and Susan Shipman-Joy of Lynn, Mass.; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. 

Services were held April 10 with arrangements by Ross’ Shalom Chapels, Springfield. Memorial contributions may be made to Union-Hillside Hadassah, c/o Irene Goldie-Petras, 1113 Liberty Ave., Union, NJ 07083-4838.
