Scotch Plains shul welcomes new cantor
Congregation Beth Israel will welcome Jacob Greenberg as its new cantor on Friday, June 30. His predecessor, Matt Axelrod, was the synagogue’s cantor for 33 years and will be the executive director of the Cantors Assembly.
Cantor Greenberg was the cantor and youth director at Congregation B’nai Israel in Toms River, where he sat on the board of the Jewish Federation of Ocean County. He’s originally from the Baltimore area and received his master’s degree in sacred music and cantorial ordination from the Jewish Theological Seminary.
Congregation Beth Israel’s board voted unanimously to hire Cantor Greenberg after a six-month-long search. “I was so impressed with the enthusiasm and energy Cantor Greenberg brings to the bimah when leading services,” the shul’s Rabbi Howard Tilman said. “We immediately felt at home with his presence and leadership, which will help ensure a smooth transition into the High Holidays and beyond. Cantor Greenberg connected well with students and adults of all ages and is excited to work with b’nai mitzvah families and community members.” For information, call (908) 889-1830.
