On March 30, more than 200 members of Congregation Israel of Springfield gathered at the Crystal Plaza in Livingston to honor six community leaders.

Harry Czinn, the guest of honor, earned the Rabbi Israel E. Turner Memorial award to recognize his service to the modern Orthodox shul. For more than 30 years, Mr. Czinn has been involved at CIS; his many roles include fundraising and networking. He established the shul’s High Holiday aliyah auction, co-chaired the High Holiday seating committee, and delivers meals to Holocaust survivors with Jewish Family Services.

Clara Harelik Mevorah received the Aishet Chayil award for her longstanding commitment to CIS and the larger Springfield community. She’s been the town’s mayor three times and has been on many boards and committees at the local and county level. As a lawyer, she dedicates her time and legal expertise to support the shul.

Les Mandel earned the Edward Konigsberg Memorial award for his years as a dedicated member of the shul’s daily hashkama minyan, his support of shul kiddushes, and managing the weekly Yad Leah donation program.

Chana and Akiva Horowitz were the Young Leadership honorees. Chana Horowitz co-chairs the youth department and is one of the founders of the annual CIS Yom Chesed program; Akiva Horowitz is on the religious committee and is a shul gabbai.

Ariella Konigsberg was the Joseph Tammam Memorial Youth Community Service Scholarship awardee. A fourth generation Springfield resident, she is a senior youth group leader.

The celebratory evening featured an interactive program, smorgasbord, dinner, and a photo program that showed memorable moments from the event.
