Susanne Elisabeth Kalem
Susanne Elisabeth Kalem (Hallo), 87, of Springfield died Dec. 29, 2010. Born in Kassel, Germany, she escaped from Germany on the last Kindertransport in 1939 and moved to Springfield 59 years ago.
Mrs. Kalem was a registered nurse at Overlook Hospital, Summit, before retiring.
She received her nursing degree from the Mt. Sinai School of Nursing in New York City. She was a member of the Mt. Sinai School of Nursing Alumni Association and director of the Red Cross Blood Bank of Springfield.
She was a member of Hadassah of Springfield, where she was named Woman of the Year in the 1990s, and was a founding member of Temple Beth Ahm Yisrael, Springfield.
Predeceased by her daughter, Jeanette, she is survived by her husband of 64 years, Daniel; three daughters, Allyson Aborn of Scarsdale, NY, Toni Kalem of Santa Monica, Calif., and Rachel Funcheon of Watchung; a brother, William Hallo of Hamden, Conn.; and five grandchildren.
Services were held Dec. 31 with arrangements by Menorah Chapels at Millburn, Union. Memorial contributions may be made to W.I.S.E. Adult Day Services, Union.
