Sylvia Amster
Sylvia Amster (Gottlieb), 99, of Florham Park died Aug. 8, 2018. She was born in Newark.
As a young woman, Mrs. Amster held several jobs in the city of Newark. She began as the assistant to the city’s art director, moved on to the sheriff’s office, was manager of the defense council during World War II, and was office manager for the public affairs department.
Throughout her adult life she was involved in many charitable and philanthropic organizations. She held many positions in the Essex County Section of NCJW, including president. She also served on the board of national NCJW as chairwoman of the public relations committee and editor of their national magazine. She was a founding member of the Cerebral Palsy League, president of the sisterhood of Temple Sharey Tefilo-Israel, president of the P.T.A. of South Mountain School in South Orange, and publicity chair for South Orange Junior High. She also volunteered for United Way, conducting workshops in public speaking and public relations.
Predeceased by her husband, David, she is survived by her son, Edward of Florham Park; her daughter, Robin Amster of Madison; and a
granddaughter.
Services were held Aug. 10 with arrangements by Menorah Chapels at Millburn, Union.
