Taste of Israel: Montclair chef’s food truck to debut at Ner Tamid
Chef Meny Vaknin — “Chopped” champion and celebrated restaurateur of Marcel and Mishmish in Montclair — is launching his latest culinary venture: a food and catering truck that serves up the fabulous flavors that diners at his eateries have long savored.
Maayana: Mediterranean Soul Bites is a homage to the Israeli/Jewish Moroccan street food that Chef Meny grew up with. The food is all freshly made; the menu is small and casual. All meat and chicken products used are kosher, and all the offerings are dairy-free. One featured item is sandwiches made with Frena, a rustic and richly flavored Moroccan bread that mothers traditionally baked in outdoor ovens.
Maayana will have its debut at the Yom Ha’atzmaut Celebration and fund-raiser for Kibbutz Nahal Oz at Temple Ner Tamid in Bloomfield on Tuesday, May 14, 5:30-8:30 p.m. “I’ve always wanted my restaurant customers to feel like they are dining in my own home — full of the comfort and aromas and flavors that I loved growing up in Israel,” said Vaknin. “Now I am proud to be able to bring that warmth and delicious food to people’s homes.”
Maayana is available for private parties — birthdays, bar/bat mitzvah celebrations, graduations, weddings, baby namings. Menus can be tailored to the host’s specifications within the Maayana cuisine.
