Temple Emanu-El joins fight against hunger
Temple Emanu-El of West Essex in Livingston mustered a corps of 80 hard-working volunteers on a recent summer Sunday to join in the fight against food insecurity.
The synagogue joined forces with the Jewish Relief Agency, a national organization that uses a door-to-door approach to feeding needy families. The local MetroWest branch, based in Morristown, stages a monthly food distribution at area synagogues, serving over 50 households.
On July 10 JRA delivered five pallets to Emanu-El filled with cereal, canned goods, and raw sweet potatoes. Volunteers sorted and packed the food into 190 boxes, then loaded the boxes into the cars of 36 volunteers who made personal deliveries.
Suzanne Klar, chair of the temple’s social action committee, who coordinated the effort with JRA, said, “It was a heart-warming sight to see volunteers of all ages and abilities working side by side to get this important effort completed to bring happiness, joy, and sustenance to hundreds of people.”
