By defeating the Yankees 6-1 on Oct. 22, Ian Kinsler and the Texas Rangers advance to the World Series for the first time in franchise history. Kinsler was 1-2 with a double, a walk, and an RBI sac fly in the finale, bringing his ALCS stats to .250 (5 for 20) with a double, a triple, three RBIs, and two stolen bases in the six-game series.
The Rangers were scheduled to take on the National League champion the San Francisco Giants on Oct. 26.
NFL
Congratulations to Geoff Schwartz and the Carolina Panthers, who won their first game of the year (against five losses) with a 23-20 edging over Taylor Mays and the equally hapless San Francisco 49ers. Mays made three tackles and assisted on another. Schwartz made the game start for the victors.
Defensive tackle Erik Lorig recorded his first professional tackle in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ 18-17 win over the St. Louis Rams.
Adam Podlesh placed two of his three punts (38.3 avg./55 yard longest) inside the 20-yard line, but it mattered little as the host KC Chiefs defeated the visiting Jacksonville Jaguars, 42-20.
Antonio Garay made three tackles — including a sack — and assisted on another, but a last-second field goal attempt clunked off the goal post and the San Diego Chargers lost to the New England Patriots, 23-20. Long snapper David Binn is out for the year with an injury.
Once again, the best Sage Rosenfels could do was get into the game as holder for the kickers, which he did often as the NY Giants beat the Dallas Cowboys, 41-35. Igor Olshansky made one tackle for Dallas. Kyle Kosier is out for at least two games with an Achilles injury.
And there’s a “new” MOT in town. Wide receiver Greg Camarillo, a four-year veteran now playing for the Minnesota Vikings, was “discovered” by Anna Katherine Clemmons for ESPN The Magazine in a 2009 article. According to the story, “Greg’s grandfather immigrated to the U.S. from Quiringuicharo, Mexico, and his mother’s family came to the U.S. from Hungary with Jewish heritage. Greg’s grandfather was Catholic, so the Camarillo household celebrated both Christmas and Hanukkah.”
Camarillo, 26, broke in with the San Diego Chargers in 2006. During his career (he has also played for the Miami Dolphins), he has appeared in 59 games, with 119 catches for 1,388 yards and five touchdowns, including one in the 24-21 win over the Dallas Cowboys on Oct. 17.
NBA
Jordan Farmar and Omri Casspi continued to prepare for their season openers on Oct. 27 against the Detroit Pistons and Minnesota Timberwolves, respectively.
Casspi scored 17 points in a 96-94 win over the Los Angeles Clippers on Oct. 19. The same day, Farmar put down 21 points in 28 minutes — including five of nine three-point attempts — in a 117-111 loss to the NY Knicks.
