Toxic mothers
I am writing in reference to a letter published Dec. 13 regarding Marta Fuchs’s “Mourning mom and inherited scars” (Nov. 24, 2016). The writer expressed her disapproval of “inappropriately airing” some shortcomings of the author’s recently deceased mother.
Since I, like Fuchs, also had a toxic mother, I was drawn to this controversy. Not all Jewish mothers are warm and cuddly. I want to commend Fuchs for her courage in publicly sharing some of the awful truths of her relationship with her mother. And I also want to thank her profoundly for showing other women like me, with mothers like hers, that we are not alone in our life-long struggles to find — and ultimately love — our true selves.
