Where no latke recipe has gone before
Before paying $70 for Starfield, the long-awaited video game from the creators of Fallout 76, potential customers are warned that it contains “Violence / Blood / Suggestive Themes / Strong Language / Use of Drugs.”
The latkes, however, are meant to be a surprise.
Starfield is set in the year 2330, and its players assume the role of a space explorer seeking rare artifacts throughout the galaxy.
But early reports on internet forums such as Reddit’s “/r/Jewdank” and Facebook’s “Star Trek Jewposting” revealed that the future imagined by the designers of Microsoft-owned Bethesda Softworks is not judenrein.
On the outskirts of Akila City, a player can meet a character named Abe Levitz, who speaks Yiddish, explaining in English, “It’s an old, old, old family tradition…. It’s a point of pride for our family, and something I’d like to pass on to others so they don’t forget, like my great-great-great-great grandmother’s latke recipe.”
And while the game doesn’t apparently give the recipe — a trade secret, no doubt — it does promise that if a player eats them, their character will gain 10 Health points.
Talk about healthy Jewish representation!
