The YIVO Institute for Jewish Research presents a Nusakh Vilne memorial on Zoom on Sunday, September 19, at 1 p.m. YIVO will commemorate the Jewish community of Vilna — its birthplace — through poetry and song. The program will feature a remembrance of Chayele Palevsky, a partisan fighting the Nazis in a Jewish unit based in the Narotsh woods near Vilna in Poland (now Vilnius, Lithuania). She and her husband, Shimke, established Nusakh Vilne and ran its annual memorial event for many years. The memorial also will feature a conversation on the role of women as resistance fighters, with a focus on Vilna and its Jewish and political culture.
The conversation, chaired by Elye Palevsky, will be moderated by Eddy Portnoy, YIVO’s academic advisor, and will include Judy Batalion, New York Times bestselling author of “The Light of Days: The Untold Story of Women Resistance Fighters in Hitler’s Ghettos.”
