Albert Bornstein

Albert Bornstein, 105, of Chester died May 29, 2014. Born in Newark, he raised his family there and in Hillside. He later moved to Springfield and then Whippany before moving to Chester in 2011.

Mr. Bornstein had a lifelong involvement with the clothing industry. As a young man in the 1930s, he worked for Kresge’s (one of the 20th century’s largest retailers, which was later renamed Kmart and is now part of today’s Sears Holdings Corp.) in Newark as a buyer. He went on to operate his own children’s clothing stores, first in Irvington and later in Newark on Chancellor Avenue. He then took a position with Gruber’s and managed the boy’s department at the West Orange store until his retirement.

He was a member of the men’s club and was also the president of the Senior League for many years at Temple Beth Ahm Yisrael in Springfield. 

Predeceased by his wife of 69 years, Edith, in 2007, he is survived by his daughter, Meryl (John) of Florida; his son, Donald (Laura) of Lebanon Township; two grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

Services were held May 30 with arrangements by J.L. Apter Memorial Chapels of Dover. Memorial contributions may be made to Care Alternatives Hospice, 70 Jackson Dr., Cranford, NJ 07016.
