Allan Handelman
Allan Jacob Handelman, 86, of Monroe Township died Jan. 7, 2020. He was born and raised in Paterson and also had lived in Arizona, California, Israel, Michigan, Virginia, and Florida.
Mr. Handelman held teaching positions at Theunis Dey Elementary School in Wayne and the Manito School in Oakland.
He attended Fairleigh Dickinson University, where he was a pitcher for their baseball team before transferring to Duke University. In 1952 he attended the St. Louis Cardinals Tryout Camp in Hawthorne. He earned a B.S. in social studies from Seton Hall University in 1956 and a second B.S. at the University of Bridgeport in health and physical education in 1962. In 1968 while teaching he earned a M.S. from Montclair State College in student personnel services.
In Paterson, he was active in Temple Emanuel’s youth group in the choir and as captain of their baseball team.
He enjoyed singing with the Clearbrook Melody Singers in Monroe.
Predeceased by his younger brother Stanley in 2015, he is survived by his sister-in-law, Linda (Bromberg); two nieces, Amy Handelman and Holli O’Donnell; a nephew, Jared; and six grand-nieces and -nephews.
Services were held Jan. 9 with arrangements by Louis Suburban Chapel, Fair Lawn.
