Author series highlights current issues
The Spotlight Speaker Series, given by prominent authors and journalists at the JCC of Central New Jersey, Scotch Plains, will continue with “Israel’s Edge: The Story of the IDF’s Most Elite Unit — Talpiot” with author Jason Gewirtz on Tuesday, Feb. 28, at 7 p.m.
Gewirtz, an executive producer at the business news network CNBC, has covered Israel for CNBC and NBC News.
“Arab Fall: How the Muslim Brotherhood Won and Lost Egypt in 891 Days” with author Eric Trager will be presented on Sunday, March 5, at a 10:30 a.m. brunch.
Trager is the Esther K. Wagner Fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, where his research focuses on Egyptian politics. His writings have appeared in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and The Washington Post.
“The Curious Case of Kiryas Joel: The Rise of a Village Theocracy and the Battle to Defend the Separation of Church and State” with authors Louis Grumet and John Caher will be held on Thursday, March 16, at 7 p.m.
Grumet, the former executive director of the New York State School Boards Association, has also served as special assistant to Mario Cuomo during his term as Secretary of State of New York. Caher, an award-winning writer specializing in legal reportage, is the author or coauthor of five books, including Personal Bankruptcy Laws for Dummies, King of the Mountain, and A Time for Reflection.
Each program costs $18, $15 for JCC members/seniors/students. Subscriber Plus supporters receive one ticket for each event plus a $36 tax-deductible philanthropic donation for $104, $92 for JCC members/seniors/students. Spotlight Speaker Series sponsors, at $218, receive two tickets per event, reserved seats, and a signed book of choice.
