Bullets and ballots

I just read the election article by Jill Garbi and laughed out loud at the brilliant ending about her mother-in-law’s attempt to influence her son’s vote (“New Israelis face balagan at the ballot box,” Jan. 29).

I can top that story, however.

Menachem Begin was my third cousin, and when he ran in 1977 for prime minister, my great-aunt drove my cousins at gunpoint to the polls in Ramat Gan. One of my cousins got out of the car and told her that she would never know who they were voting for because it’s a secret ballot. She responded: “Nobody will find your bodies, either.”

They voted Likud.
