Burying books in Saddle Brook
As it has done for the last three years, the Cemetery Association of North Jersey is sponsoring the burial of books and papers that no longer can be used but include God’s name. Those books — shaimos — will be buried in two graves at the Americus Cemetery on Midland Avenue in Saddle Brook on Sunday, May 4, from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The Cemetery Association, working with the Community Alliance for Jewish Cemeteries, asks that books to be buried be brought to the site that day, in paper bags; there is no onsite storage. Boxes will not be accepted; the association will sell bags at the cemetery at $1 each. (People are free to carry their books to the cemetery in boxes, crates, or other containers, but they will have to bring those containers out with them.)
Volunteers are welcome, including young volunteers; it is an opportunity not only to help but also to learn.
The Cemetery Association asks for a donation of $18 for up to four bags, and $36 for up to six bags. For more than 10 bags, or for any other information, call Meyer Levine at (917) 699-6057 or email him at meyer@cajfnj.org.
