Carter Bennett

Carter J. Bennett, 77, of Claymont, Del., a longtime resident of Millburn, died March 28, 2013. He was born and raised in Newark and also had lived in Lake Worth, Fla.

Mr. Bennett began his career in journalism in 1957 at The Item of Millburn and Short Hills. After two years of military service as an infantry officer, he returned to the newspaper, rising through the ranks to become the editor and general manager from the early 1970s until his retirement in October 2000.

He was a graduate of Rutgers University’s Class of 1957, New Brunswick, and a member of ZBT fraternity.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Marlene (Gross); two sons, Laurence (Suzanne) of Whitehouse Station and Jonathan (Gina) of Garnet Valley, Pa.; and five grandchildren.

Services were held March 31 with arrangements by Schoenberg Memorial Chapel, Wilmington, Del. Memorial contributions may be made to Seasons Hospice & Palliative Care at Christiana Care Hospital, Newark, Del., or the American Lung Association.
