David Szerlip
David I. Szerlip, 73, of Livingston died July 9, 2020. He was raised in Millburn.
Mr. Szerlip joined his father’s insurance agency, Szerlip & Company. In 1994 he opened his own agency, David Szerlip & Associates in Berkeley Heights, specializing in insurance for non-profits and social services in the areas of mental health and substance use disorder. He served as a business adviser to many organizations, including the American Association for the Treatment of Opioid Dependence (AATOD), guiding such national organizations in all insurance-related matters. After selling his agency he returned to the family business.
He graduated from Millburn High School in 1965 and University of Miami.
David was a fifth-degree black belt in karate, conducting weekly classes with a group of members.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Kathleen Y. (Gorton); his daughter, Kathleen (Brian) Edelman; a brother, Robert; and two grandchildren.
A celebration of his life will be held July 18 at 4 p.m. outside his daughter’s Livingston home. Memorial contributions may be made to Nonprofit Risk Management Center, 204 South King St., Leesburg, VA 20175.
