Evelyn Sambur
Evelyn B. Sambur (Naumoff), 94, of San Antonio, Texas, died June 10, 2015. Born and raised in Newark, she also had lived in Springfield and Maplewood.
Mrs. Sambur was a registered nurse at Newark Beth Israel Hospital from 1942 through the mid-1950s. She then became a school nurse at Central High School in Newark for 20 years. During this time she helped found the Newark Nurses Union.
She was a graduate of South Side High School in Newark, Newark Beth Israel School of Nursing, and Jersey City State College.
Upon her retirement, she became an active volunteer for many institutions, including the Maplewood Library, Tuscan School, Temple Sharey Tefilo-Israel in South Orange, and St. Barnabas Medical Center.
Predeceased by her husband of 49 years, Solomon Milton Sambur, in 1995, and a daughter, Joy Ann Sambur (Ron) Greisen in 1999, she is survived by a daughter, Gail Sambur (David) Markson of San Antonio; her son, Ned (Ilene) of Wharton; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Services were held June 14 with arrangements by Menorah Chapels at Millburn, Union. Memorial contributions may be made to The Joy Ann Greisen Scholarship Fund at Tufts University, Medford, Mass.
