Freda Garnett
Freda Kohn Garnett of Summit died Jan. 19, 2013. Born in Waterbury, Conn., she grew up in Garfield before residing in South Orange for over 40 years. She also had lived in Verona and West Orange.
Mrs. Garnett began her career as the head of advertising for the Canadian Fur Company of New York City. She went on to serve in a similar capacity at Capitol Lighting. Later in her life she worked as a case worker for the Essex County Board of Social Services, retiring in 1980.
She graduated from Indiana University in 1940 with a degree in journalism.
She performed as a concert violinist with several community orchestras in Essex County and other chamber ensembles. She was a member of Congregation Beth El in South Orange.
Predeceased by her husbands, Leo Kohn and Robert Garnett, she is survived by her son, Charles (Susan) Kohn of Needham, Mass.; two daughters, Alice (Richard) Barron of Chatham and Penny Kohn of Brookline, Mass.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services were held Jan. 21 with arrangements by Ross’ Shalom Chapels, Chatham.
