Frieda “Malchi” Appel, 86, of Springfield died May 27, 2016.
Mrs. Appel was a Holocaust survivor who came to the United States in 1950 at age 21. She had previously owned a grocery store in Irvington with her first husband, who was murdered in a robbery at that store.
She was a longtime member of Temple Beth Ahm Yisrael of Springfield. She had an affinity for country music and line dancing.
Predeceased by her husband of 40 years, David, in 2012, she is survived by two sons, Simon Hersh of East Brunswick and Alex Hersh; two grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
Services were held May 29 with arrangements by J.L. Apter Memorial Chapels of Maplewood.
