Gadiel Smith

Gadiel Smith, MD, 100, of West Caldwell died May 31, 2013. He previously lived in Livingston.

Dr. Smith was former chief of general internal medicine at the Veterans Administration hospital in East Orange and was an associate professor at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. He had established a medical practice earlier in the Bronx.

He attended medical school in Geneva, Switzerland.

After age 90, he continued to serve at Daughters of Israel, West Orange. He was active in the American Jewish Committee, where he promoted interfaith dialogue with the Catholic diocese. He was also a leader at Temple Emanu-El in Livingston, and led Bible study groups at Crane’s Mill community in West Caldwell.

He is survived by his wife, Anita; two daughters, Debbie and Tina; three grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Services were held June 3 with arrangements by Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel, Livingston.
