Gertrude Siwoff

Gertrude Schatzberg Siwoff, 97, of New York City died July 14, 2018. She was born in the Bronx.

Mrs. Siwoff was a bookkeeper in her husband’s business, the Elias Sports Bureau, for many years.

She transcribed books into Braille for most of her life, receiving honors for being the oldest active Braille transcriber for the Jewish Braille Institute. She also volunteered in a literacy program, teaching new immigrants to read.

She studied nursing at Johns Hopkins Medical Center.

She is survived by her husband of 70 years, Seymour; her son, Ronald of Chester; her daughter, Nancy Gilston; four grandchildren; and two great-grandsons.

Services were held July 22 at Temple Emanu-El, New York City. Memorial contributions may be made to Jewish Braille Institute, 110 East 30th St., New York, N.Y. 10016.
