Gloria Kahn

Gloria Helen Kahn (Franklin), 83, of West Orange died June 9, 2014. Born in Manhattan and raised in the Bronx, she also lived in North Bergen, West Orange, and Roseland. 

Mrs. Kahn was a paralegal, a realtor, a literacy volunteer, and a book seller for Barnes and Noble for 20 years.

She graduated from Hunter College High School for intellectually gifted students in New York and attended Hunter College for one year.

In 1939, she won the singing competition at the New York World’s Fair. 

She and her husband Lee were two of the original founders of Congregation Ahawas Achim B’nai Jacob and David in West Orange, which was named for her father-in-law, David. She was the synagogue’s first sisterhood president.

She is survived by her husband of 64 years; two daughters, Meryl Levine of South Orange and Dale Kahn of West Orange; her son, Ric of Boston; a brother, Sherman of Boynton Beach, Fla.; and four grandchildren. 

Services were held June 11 with arrangements by Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel, Livingston. Memorial contributions may be made to any breast cancer or Alzheimer’s disease organization.
