Harold Newmark

Harold L. Newmark, 95, of Maplewood died Jan. 11, 2014. Born in the Bronx, he resided in Brooklyn and Long Island before moving to Maplewood in 1960.

Mr. Newmark was employed as a pharmaceutical chemist in the drug industry for 27 years at Hoffman-La Roche. He then worked as a chemist conducting cancer research for Rutgers University School of Pharmacy, Piscataway, and at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, New York City, for many years before retiring five years ago.

Rutgers University recognized his contributions to cancer research with an honorary PhD. He was the recipient of the Townsend Harris Medal of the Alumni Association of City College of New York, and was active in the American Society of Cancer Research, the American Chemical Society, and the Society of Sigma Xi.

He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army Air Corps.

Predeceased by his first wife, Helen (Rosenberg), he is survived by his wife, Phyllis (Klein); his children, Jonathan Newmark of Burke, Va., Robin Newmark of Golden, Colo., Ellen Miller of Merrick, NY, Dale Hirschman of New York City, and Janet Fenstermacher of Arlington, Va.; and seven grandchildren.

Services were held Jan. 14 with arrangements by Menorah Chapels at Millburn, Union. Memorial contributions may be made to Susan Lehman Cullman Laboratory for Cancer Research, Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy, Rutgers University, 164 Frelinghuysen Rd., Piscataway, NJ 08854-8020.
