Irene Freiberg
Irene Freiberg (Gottlieb), 80, of Monmouth Junction died June 6, 2014. She was born in Nuremburg, Germany, and was a Holocaust survivor who escaped to England and eventually came to the United States, where her family settled in Newark.
Mrs. Freiberg worked as a teacher and librarian for 27 years in Old Bridge.
She earned a bachelor’s degree from Kean College followed by a master’s degree and a master’s plus 30.
On several occasions she spoke of her experiences during the Holocaust to schoolchildren.
Predeceased by her husband, Alex, she is survived by three daughters, Susan (Stephen) Northridge of Celebration, Fla., Audrey (Robert) Niezgoda of Washington Township, and Edie Freiberg of Monmouth Junction; two granddaughters; and her partner of 19 years, Steven Gazdek.
Services were held June 9 with arrangements by Orland’s Ewing Memorial Chapel, Ewing. Memorial contributions may be made to Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
