Janet Ettelman

Janet N. Ettelman, 89, of Union died May 8, 2019. Born in Mannheim, Germany, she immigrated to the United States in 1940, growing up in New York City. She later lived in Hewlett, N.Y.

Mrs. Ettelman taught at Hebrew Academy of Long Beach, New York, for around 20 years after having been a special education teacher in Cranford and Roselle Park.

She graduated from Hunter College and Kean University.

She was a Girl Scout leader for years and an avid bridge player and lover of books. She was an active participant in several synagogues, including Temple Sinai of Summit; Temple Sinai of Long Island; Temple Am Echad of Lynbrook, N.Y.; and Temple Sha’arey Shalom of Springfield. She also served as a docent at the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County.

Predeceased by her husband, David, she is survived by two daughters, Susan Eisenhauer of Bloomfield and Laura Ettelman (Sheldon Gunter) of Union; her son, Brian Ettelman (Christopher Doyle) of Atlanta; and two grandchildren.

Services were held May 10 with arrangements by Menorah Chapels at Millburn, Union.
