Jerome L. Trachtenberg

Jerome L. Trachtenberg, 86, of Howell died July 30, 2011. Born in California, he lived in Newark and Hillside before moving to Howell in 1987.

Mr. Trachtenberg was an educator for 36 years, beginning his teaching career at Lower Camden County Regional High School and then transferring to Thomas Jefferson High School in Elizabeth, where he also coached the tennis team. He spent the majority of his career teaching in Newark at South Side High School, the Education Center for Youth, and Central High School, where he served as chairman of the business department. He was also an owner and director for many years of Crestwood Day Camp, Mt. Freedom.

He graduated from Montclair State College and received his master’s degree from Temple University.

He was a coach in the Hillside Little League and for many years served as the league’s statistician. He was president of the Temple B’nai Abraham men’s club, Montclair State College Alumni Association, Newark City Administrators and Supervisors Association (CASA), Northern NJ Region of the National Federation of Men’s Clubs, NJ State Council of the American Federation of School Administrators, Newark Chairmen’s Association, the board of directors of The Villages Association, and the Villages Association men’s club. He was also a member of the Villages Association Finance Committee and the board of directors of CASA.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Gloria (Topper); his daughter, Linda of Swampscott, Mass.; two sons, Alan of Somerset and Michael of Long Valley; a sister, Sylvia of Warrington, Pa.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services were held Aug. 2 with arrangements by Menorah Chapels at Millburn, Union.
