Like father, like son?

According to reports (“San Bernardino killer’s father: Son was obsessed with Israel,” Dec. 15), “The father of San Bernardino killer Syed Rizan Farook said his son was obsessed with Israel, which  shaped his [Islamist] worldview.” Farook is quoted as saying, “I told him he had to stay calm and be patient because in two years Israel will not exist anymore.”

It seems clear to me from his statements that Mr. Farook saw the volatile possibilities of his son’s hatred; otherwise, why try to persuade his son “not to act” on his hatred of Israel? Does Mr. Farook look back at his conversations with his son and perhaps regret that he did not contact authorities? He does not say — but what a difference he would have made if he had.
