Marking USA’s 250th anniversary

On July 3, Congregation Adath Shalom and Temple Beth Am, both in Morris Plains, held a joint Kabbalat Shabbat service celebrating the 250th anniversary of the United States. It was led by Cantor Bruce Ruben of Temple Beth Am and Cantor Avima Rudavsky Darnov of Congregation Adath Shalom. Dr. Ellen F. Heyman, an historic reenactor, dressed in period clothing as she gave a presentation about Rachel Phillips Levy, telling the history of Sephardic Jews coming to America from Recife, Brazil in 1654 and settling in New Amsterdam, and her own family’s history.
