Michael Spier

Michael Spier, 88, of Maplewood died Nov. 25, 2010. Born in Poland, he was the youngest of five children; his mother and siblings were killed in the Holocaust. He escaped death when the gas chambers at Auschwitz malfunctioned; he was subsequently sent to Blechhammer concentration camp, from which he escaped.

Mr. Spier came to the United States in 1949, first residing in Newark and then in Maplewood for the last 45 years.

He worked as a commercial artist for Nielsen & Company in New York City.

He was a member of Cafe Europa.

He is survived by his wife, Rose (Lichtenstein); two sons, Bernard and Norman, both of Maplewood; and two grandchildren.

Services were held Nov. 28 with arrangements by Menorah Chapels at Millburn, Union.
