Minna Kaphan
Minna Kaphan of Springfield died Jan. 19, 2015. Born in Newark, she lived in Hillside and Millburn before moving to Springfield in 1976.
Ms. Kaphan was a teacher in the Newark public schools for 40 years, teaching at the Camden Street Elementary and George Washington Carver schools. Previously she taught at the Harding School in Kenilworth for seven years.
She earned a BA in elementary education in 1950 and an MA in administration and supervision, both from Kean College. She then attended Seton Hall University in the 1950s to pursue graduate credits in education.
She was a member of the New Jersey Education Association and Newark Teachers Union, as well as the Pauline Levin Memorial Club, an organization that she did charitable work with, for 80 years.
She is survived by her sister, Thelma (Jay) Jennis of Livingston; her nieces and nephews, Andrew (Harriet) Jennis, Richard (Bonnie) Jennis, and Lisa (Michael) Jennis; and six great-nieces and -nephews.
Services were held Jan. 22 with arrangements by Menorah Chapels at Millburn, Union. Memorial contributions may be made to Oheb Shalom Congregation, South Orange.
