Sara Martin
Sara Ontell Martin, 83, of West Palm Beach, Fla., died Dec. 18, 2013. Born in Newark, she had lived in Boynton Beach, Fla.; East Northport, NY; and West Orange before moving five weeks ago to West Palm Beach.
Mrs. Martin, who had undertaken private vocal studies, performed with the St. Louis Municipal Opera, Lambertville Music Circus, and Paper Mill Playhouse. She was a performer on the television shows Omnibus and Your Show of Shows.
Certified a Reform Jewish Educator (RJE) by National Association of Temple Educators, she was a Hebrew teacher at Verona Jewish Center in the 1960s; a music, Hebrew teacher, and b’nei mitzva tutor at Temple Beth David in Commack, NY; religious school principal at Temple Emanuel of Great Neck, NY, and Congregation L’Dor Va-dor of Lake Worth, Fla.; interim religious school principal at Temple Beth Torah, Wellington, Fla.; and a b’nei mitzva tutor to hundreds of students in Long Island and Florida from 1967 to 2007.
She graduated from Weequahic High School’s class of January 1948 in Newark.
She was a member of Temple B’nai Jeshurun in Short Hills and Newark and its sisterhood, 1962-67; a member and sisterhood president at Temple Beth David, and member of Congregation L’Dor Va-dor, Lake Worth.
Predeceased by her husband of 54 years, Stephen J., she survived by two daughters, Joanna (Simon) Barouch of East Brunswick and Debra (Steven) Shapiro of Lake Worth; her son, Andrew (Dana) of Las Vegas; three grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and her companion, Harold Folz of Boynton Beach.
