Sarah Shames

Sarah Shames, 90, of Somerset died April 14, 2020. Born and raised in Newark, she lived most of her life in Irvington before moving to Elizabeth, Westfield, and then to Somerset almost two years ago.

Mrs. Shames worked for Jewish Family Service in Elizabeth for over 25 years; and also had worked as head teller at First National State Bank of NJ in Irvington.

She was very active with both Westfield Senior Housing and Stein Assisted Living in Somerset. She was also an active member of Congregation A.A.B.C. in Irvington and Elmora Hebrew Center in Elizabeth.

Predeceased by her husband, Harry, she is survived by two daughters, Marcy Fox of Elizabeth and Paula (Mitchell) Burg of Israel; a sister, Ruth Kahn; seven grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

A private burial was held with arrangements by Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel, Livingston. Memorial contributions may be made to Jewish Family Service of Central NJ or Yad Sarah of Beit Shemesh, Israel (en.yad-sarah.net).
