Seymour Gelzer

Seymour “Sy” Gelzer, 86, of Verona died Feb. 17, 2012. Born in Jersey City, he moved to Verona in 1970.

Mr. Gelzer worked as an engineer at Picatinny Arsenal for many years.

He earned his engineering degree from New York University.

Involved in driving patients to medical appointments, he was a mainstay of Congregation Beth Ahm of West Essex, Verona, which named him “Man of the Year” at its 68th Annual Affair in 2004. He was fluent in Yiddish.

During World War II, he made multiple attempts to join the U.S. Military, Army, Navy, and Marine Corps, but was disqualified due to severe hearing loss.

Predeceased by his wife, Natalie, he is survived by his daughter, Gina; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and his long-time companion, Fran Guttentag.

Services were held Feb. 19 with arrangements by Jewish Memorial Chapel, Clifton. Memorial contributions may be made to Congregation Beth Ahm.
