As Jack Schlossberg, President John F. Kennedy’s grandson, enters the race to succeed longtime Congressman Jerry Nadler, who is retiring — and who is actively Jewish — the young would-be candidate discusses his background.

His mother, Caroline Kennedy, is Catholic, one of a famously Catholic family. His father, Edwin Schlossberg, is the son of Orthodox Jews. So of course, halachically, Jack is not Jewish. And he was brought up Catholic. He calls himself culturally Jewish; he often identifies as Jewish in some way or other.

Last year, the website Hey Alma emailed Schlossberg to ask if he is Jewish. This was his response: “I feel I’m at least 100% half Jewish ;)”
