Stuart Kaback

Stuart M. Kaback, 77, of Cranford died Feb. 13, 2012. He was born in Elizabeth and moved to Brooklyn, where he spent his childhood.

Dr. Kaback joined Esso Research and Engineering Co. in 1960, retiring in 2002 as a senior scientific adviser.

He attended Columbia University and received his PhD in organic chemistry in 1960.

He held numerous patents, was published frequently, and was internationally recognized as an expert in his field. He was recognized for his significant contributions in polymer science and engineering patent information with the American Petroleum Institute, Chemical Abstracts Service, Derwent Information Ltd., Questel-Orbit, and the Kirk-Othmer Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology. He was a member of the American Chemical Society and won many awards for his work in patent information, including the prestigious Herman Skolnik award.

He was a member of Temple Beth-El Mekor Chayim since moving to Cranford in 1966, serving as its president, chair of the board of education and ritual committees, and in a number of other capacities, including singing in the choir.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Marilyn; his daughter, Robin of East Brunswick; his son, Gilbert of Connecticut; and five grandchildren.

Services were held Feb. 15 with arrangements by Menorah Chapels at Millburn, Union. Memorial contributions may be made to the Stuart M. Kaback Memorial Fund at Temple Beth-El Mekor Chayim, 338 Walnut Ave., Cranford, NJ 07016.
