Sylvia Weiss

Sylvia Dichner Weiss, 101, died Aug. 7, 2016. She was born in New York City and raised in Indianapolis. A former resident of Lewisburg, Pa., Washington, DC, and Queens, she moved to East Windsor in 1972.

Mrs. Weiss was an East Windsor Township Council member, chairperson of the NJ Commission on Aging, and developed East Windsor’s Senior Citizen program. In recognition of her work in senior citizen programming throughout New Jersey, the mayor of East Windsor established an annual award in her name.

She was a devoted volunteer for many organizations, including the Girl and Boy Scouts, Hadassah, the League of Women Voters, and Better Beginnings in Hightstown. She was also a long-time national board member of ElderHostel (now Road Scholar) and a columnist for the Windsor-Heights Herald. 

Predeceased by her husband, Isadore, in 1991, she is survived by four children, Mona Gottesman, Miriam Zwerin, Deb Meizler, and Marc; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. 

Services were held Aug. 9 with arrangements by Orland’s Ewing Memorial Chapel, Ewing. Memorial contributions may be made to Hadassah, Jewish Family & Children’s Service, Better Beginnings, Women’s League, or Beth El Synagogue.
