Adele K. Alper

Adele K. Alper, 75, of Seattle died May 2, 2011. She was born and raised in Newark and also lived in Englewood, Montclair, Cedar Grove, and Washington, DC, before moving to Seattle eight months ago.

Ms. Alper worked as a teacher for special-needs children. She taught briefly before having a family, and returned in the late 1970s to Passaic Valley High School, where she taught until retiring in the mid-1990s.

She graduated from Wellesley College in 1957, and earned a master’s degree from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education.

In Washington, she volunteered to work on political campaigns as well as in the office of Rep. Susan Davis (D-Calif.). She also volunteered in the District of Columbia school system, tutoring special-needs children.

She was an avid opera fan and also volunteered at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, Newark.

She is survived by a son, Martin Hamburger of Washington; two daughters, Eleanor Hamburger of Seattle and Susan Hamburger of New York; her sister, Judith A. Greene; and five grandchildren.

Private services were held May 5. Memorial contributions may be made to Wellesley College’s Class of ’57 Scholarship Fund.
