Alan Horowitz

Alan Mark Horowitz of Wilmington, Del., died Oct. 25, 2018. He was born in Newark in 1952.

Mr. Horowitz was on staff at University of Delaware as an associate professor in the Department of Sociology with a particular focus on social deviance and vice. He coauthored a book, “The Sociology of American Drug Use,” published in 2010.

He graduated from high school in Millburn and received his bachelor’s degree from Muhlenberg College before attending University of Delaware for graduate studies in sociology.

He was a competitive bridge player, becoming a Gold Life Master in relatively short time. He was president of the Delaware State Bridge Association from 2014 to 2016.

He is survived by his mother, Rita Tepper Horowitz of Livingston; two sisters, Jo Ann Horowitz of Summit and Beth Horowitz Giladi of West Orange; a brother, John Horowitz (Deborah Leavitt Horowitz) of Winter Park, Fla.; and his nieces and nephews, Avi Giladi, Leor Giladi, Elana Horowitz, Max Horowitz, and Miles Horowitz.

Services were held Oct. 28 with arrangements by Menorah Chapels at Millburn, Union. A ceremony and celebration of life will be held in Wilmington in November. Memorial contributions may be made to Amnesty International, Gay Men’s Health Crisis, or University of Delaware.
