Alex Chernoff

Alex Chernoff, 99, of Sparta died Jan. 25, 2012. He also had lived in the Concordia development of Monroe Township and spent winters in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

A musician, singer, and cantor in the New York area, Mr. Chernoff’s passion for Jewish music led him to sing with renowned Cantor Yossele Rosenblatt at the age of 15. He played and sang in the Borscht Belt Circuit in the 1940s and served as cantor at Sunrise Manor in the 1950s and 60s. In the Poconos, he mingled with entertainers such as Jerome Robbins, Carol Channing, and Imogene Coca. He was also the High Holy Days cantor for many years at The Shield of David, a boy’s orphanage in the Bronx.

In the 1960’s and 70s, as a bandleader and lead singer, he led his own orchestra under the name of Andrey Chernoff. He performed at many hasidic weddings in the NY area and led cantorial services at the Perrineville Jewish Center for many years. In Fort Lauderdale, he continued to perform in an orchestra under the direction of Ben Goldman.

Predeceased by his wife of 67 years, he is survived by two daughters, Phyllis Rehm and Arlene User.
