Arnold Ropeik

Arnold C. Ropeik, 90, of Ewing died April 13, 2012. Born in Albany, NY, he also had resided in Trenton and Lawrenceville.

Mr. Ropeik worked for the newly founded Trentonian for a short time and returned to Albany for employment at the Albany Times-Union. He returned to Trenton and took up the grocery business with his father-in-law, Albert Levine, at the Friendly Food Mart in Princeton.

He entered Rider College in 1940 and interrupted his education for three years of service with the U.S. Army in Europe. Returning to Rider, he graduated with a degree in journalism in 1947.

After graduating, he worked at the New York Journal American until 1962, when he started his lengthy career with the Trenton Times. He began as assistant copy desk editor and spent many years as copy desk chief before becoming magazine editor, news editor, and then managing editor. He ended his career as senior editor after 41 years at the Times.

He served as president of the New Jersey Press Association and the United Press International NJ Editors Association, and was a member of the Pulitzer Prize judging committee.

He was honored by State of Israel Bonds in 1973 both as “Man of the Year” and as editor of the Jewish Community Reporter, which he edited for many years.

He is survived by his wife, Bertha Levine Ropeik; two sons, David and Larry; two daughters, Toby Ropeik and Nancy Zweibel; five grandchildren; and his caregivers, Twanda Talley and Willamae Lattimer.
