Barbara Aaron

Barbara Heimlich Aaron, 96, a lifelong resident of Long Branch, died May 18, 2013.

Mrs. Aaron served as an educator for most of her adult life. She taught at the Oxford School in Miami Beach, Florida Nursing School. She then taught at the Berkeley Terrace Jr. High School in Irvington. She served during World War II in the Signal Corps Ground Signal Service at Fort Monmouth as a director of personnel counseling, where she developed centers for employee counseling. She was a teacher at Temple Beth Miriam in Elberon, where she also served as curriculum coordinator and director of education from 1943 to 1955.

She taught courses in Introductory Psychology and The Family at Highland Manor Junior College, predecessor to Monmouth University, in 1948 and 1949. She served as a substitute teacher in the Long Branch school system, principally at the high school level, from 1954 to 1957. She worked as an administrative assistant in charge of personnel for Aaron Motors, her husband Leslie’s family-owned business, between 1957 and 1960.

From 1960 to 1963, she was a counselor in Long Branch Junior High School and established a counseling service. She also taught English to students with learning disabilities.

From 1963 to 1966, she served as director of guidance in the Eatontown School System and taught grades kindergarten through eighth grade.

In 1966 through her retirement, 17 years later, she served as a guidance counselor at Middletown Township High School and as a volunteer counselor at Brookdale Community College.

She was a 1934 graduate of Long Branch Senior High School and a member of the National Honor Society. She received her BA degree from Cornell University in 1938. She received two master’s degrees from New York University, one in 1942 in education, and the second in 1963 in guidance and personnel administration. She attended Rutgers University, taking courses in personnel management in the early 1940s.

She held memberships in the National, New Jersey, and Monmouth County Education associations and the American and New Jersey Personnel & Guidance associations.

She served as president of the Long Branch Parent-Teachers Association for two terms. She was a member of the board of governors of the Monmouth County Parent-Teachers Association, and was a cochair of the Advisory Committee to the Long Branch Board of Education. She founded and served as president of the Shore Child Study Association and established classes in prenatal instruction at Monmouth Medical Center. She also served as a member of the Parents Advisory Board of The George School in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, and was a member of the Monmouth County Mental Health Board. She was also a member of the board of education of Temple Beth Miriam, where she was a lifelong member. She was a member of the Long Branch Historical Society and a 50-year member of Hollywood Golf Club in Deal.

She helped establish the Heimlich-Aaron Scholarship Fund at Beth Miriam after the passing of her brother, Dr. Ernest M. Heimlich, and the Leslie B. Aaron Scholarship Fund at Long Branch High School in memory of her husband.

Predeceased by her husband, she is survived by two sons, James G. (Madlyn) of West Long Branch and Barth F. (Brigitta) of Reno, Nev.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held at Beth Miriam on May 20; arrangements were handled by Bloomfield-Cooper Jewish Chapels, Ocean. Memorial contributions may be made to the Monmouth Medical Center Foundation or the Heimlich-Aaron Scholarship Fund at Beth Miriam.
