Celebrating High Holidays in the community

Rosh HaShanah begins this year on Wednesday, Sept. 20, and continues through Friday, Sept. 22. Yom Kippur begins on Friday, Sept. 29, and continues through Saturday night, Sept. 30. The following synagogues will celebrate the High Holidays with special programming open to the community:

Adath Shalom, Parsippany — A Rosh Hashanah family service for those with children in grades pre-K through second grade will be held Thursday-Friday, Sept. 21-22, 9:15-10:15 a.m. 

A Yom Kippur family service will be held Saturday, Sept. 30, 9:15-10:15 a.m.

Congregation Beth El, South Orange — High Holiday services will be led by Rabbi Jesse Olitzky and guest Cantor Galeet Dardashti.

Beth El will hold concurrent study sessions and social action projects from 10 to 11 a.m. and from noon to 1 p.m. on each day of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Study topics will include “Sacrifices and Standing up to God,” “Our Refugee Experience” with recently resettled refugees Balkis and Rahma Hussein, and “How to Say I’m Sorry” with Rabbi Kerry Olitzky. 

Children’s programs for all ages, including a toddler mini minyan, and a teen discussion group, will be offered. A two-hour High Holiday interactive youth program will be held for children from kindergarten to fifth grade of all abilities; teen volunteers will be paired with children who need friendly support. Special accommodations can be made for older participants; for information, contact Rivka Nelson at rnelson@bethelnj.org.

Chabad Center of Northwest NJ, Rockaway — The center, which has satellite locations in Mountain Lakes, Montville, Randolph, Budd Lake and Sparta, will hold services open to the community, including a youth program, and a home or hospital visitation service and shofar blowing for those unable to come to synagogue.

Temple Sharey Tefilo-Israel, South Orange — An erev Rosh HaShanah service will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 20, at 5:30 p.m., featuring music by the Afro-Semitic Experience. 

An intergenerational Rosh Hashanah service will be held on Thursday, Sept. 21, at 2:15 p.m., designed for young children with their parents, grandparents, or caregivers, followed by a community Tashlich service at the South Orange Duck Pond off Ridgewood Road at 4. Bring a picnic blanket and snacks.

On Saturday, Sept. 30, an intergenerational Yom Kippur service will be held at 2:15 p.m. for young children with their parents, grandparents, or caregivers.

Congregation Shomrei Emunah, Montclair — High Holiday services will be offered at no charge (donations are appreciated) to community members. 

Rosh HaShanah services will begin on Wednesday, Sept. 20, at 6:30 p.m. On Thursday, Sept. 21, services will begin at 8:45 a.m., with a tot yom tov service at 10, a family service at 11, and teen discussion at 11:15. A kids’ kiddush will be held at 12:30 p.m., followed by shofar blowing at 1 and Tashlich at Edgemont Park at 5. 

The service schedule is the same (except for Tashlich) on Friday, Sept. 22.

Yom Kippur services on Friday, Sept. 29, will begin with Kol Nidrei at 6:20 p.m. On Saturday, Sept. 30, services will begin at 9 a.m., followed by a tot yom tov for infants through age 5 at 10, a family service at 11, Yizkor at 11:30, and a teen discussion at 11:15. A kids’ kiddush will be held at 12:30 p.m.; Neilah will be held at 6, followed by Havdalah at 7:20, the final shofar blast at 7:25, and a break-the-fast.
