Chanukah in Short Hills

Chabad at Short Hills lit a public menorah throughout Chanukah; programs were tailored for preschoolers at Gan at Short Hills, Hebrew school students, teens, and adults.

More than 2,000 people attended the first night of Chanukah festivities, which included a drone show co-sponsored by the Chabad at Short Hills and the Friendship Circle. Night Two included a Chanukah carnival, with donut decorating, a dreidel bounce house, and face painting. There was also a PJ story hour with songs, pizza, and crafts, followed by a community grand menorah lighting, with help from Livingston firemen on their truck. On the seventh night of Chanukah, the community enjoyed an evening of humor and connection with comedian Leah Forster and a musical set by Shmuli Lieberman. A special honor was reserved for 100-year-old Marilyn Goldberg, who climbed on the forklift to join Rabbi Mendel Solomon to light the giant menorah.

Ms. Goldberg is a beloved pillar of the Chabad community, known for her sharp wit and sparkling personality, Rabbi Solomon said. “Marilyn embodies the holiday’s message of enduring light,” he continued. “She teaches us that when light is passed from one generation to the next, it never fades; it multiplies. This truth carries even deeper meaning following the devastating attack at Bondi Beach, where my childhood friend, Rabbi Eli Schlanger, was brutally murdered while lighting the Chanukah menorah, an act of darkness that we must now answer with this light.”
