Combating hunger
I wanted to share information about a benefit event that was held in support of South Brunswick’s Social Services’ Food Pantry.
One June 16, the concert “People are Hungry Every Day!” was sponsored by Congregation B’Nai Tikvah, under the leadership of Cantor Bruce Rockman. It was a rousing success, and included performances by The Sons of Tikvah Band, Reverend Edwin Arumanayagam, Reverend Beth Scibienski and Peter Reimann of The South Brunswick Area Clergy Association, and Makhelat HaMercaz.
Over 100 people attended the benefit and a total of over $1,600 in donations was collected as well as much needed food items to replenish our food pantry.
There are many needy families and individuals in our community that go without proper food, shelter, and essential medical care every day due to a variety of factors including low wages, job loss, injuries, illness, age, domestic violence, or divorce. The donations will help to make a difference in the lives of so many in our community.
Donations are used to replenish our Food Pantry and to purchase food vouchers for items we are not able to store on our pantry shelves. Our Human Invention Fund is also used to provide emergency assistance to indigent people in South Brunswick. We provide help with anything from utility bills to rental assistance.
Since “Charity Begins at Home” and “People are Hungry Every Day!” anyone wishing to contribute to the Human Intervention Fund can send a check to South Brunswick Social Services, PO Box 190, Municipal Complex, Monmouth Junction, NJ 08852. Food donations can also be accepted on Monday through Thursday during business hours.
This event couldn’t have happened without the tireless efforts of Cantor Bruce Rockman, Cindy Gittleman, and the entire office staff. My thanks go out to everyone who participated and I look forward this becoming an annual event.
