Doris Arshan
Doris Arshan (Zwiebel), 97, of Somerset died Sept. 2, 2017. She was born in New Brunswick and lived in Highland Park for almost 60 years.
Mrs. Arshan participated in a number of local organizations. She belonged to the St. Peter’s Hospital Auxiliary, where she performed volunteer work for many years, and was a member of the Middlesex Hospital Aid Association. She was also involved in the Cerebral Palsy Association, Brandeis University Women’s Committee, Women’s Division of the Jewish Community Center, Polio Foundation, and the Parent-Teacher Association, where she was an officer.
She was a member of Anshe Emeth Memorial Temple, New Brunswick, for over 60 years, and served as sisterhood president. She was involved in the Central Jersey Jewish Home in Somerset prior to its opening, helping to plan the initial fund-raising dinner dance and fashion show, events that continued raising money for over 30 years. She became the second president of the Home’s Auxiliary, as well as patient-advocate for its residents for over 30 years, and was honored by the New Jersey Association of Non-Profit Homes for her dedication to the residents. She was a member of the Home’s board of directors and the Wilf Campus for Senior Living in Somerset for 32 years, serving as its secretary for over 25 years. She was also a member of the committee that planned and brought to fruition the Somerset Residence Corporation, which later became the Lena and David T. Wilentz Senior Residence, and served as its secretary for over 20 years. Later she was a member of the board of the Wilf Campus’ Martin and Edith Stein Assisted Living Residence, where she became a resident in October 2009.
Predeceased by her husband, Sam, whom she married in 1940, she is survived by three sons, Norman (Judy) of Kendall Park, Stephen (Kathy) of Jackson, and Melvyn (Pat) of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; two sisters, Sylvia Yoskowitz of Monroe Township and Gert Klaus of East Brunswick; four grandchildren; and three great-grandsons.
Services were held Sept. 5 with arrangements by Crabiel Parkwest Funeral Chapel, New Brunswick. Memorial contributions may be made to Oscar and Ella Wilf Campus for Senior Living, Somerset.
