Dr. Leo Troy
Prof. Emeritus Dr. Leo Troy, 89, of West Orange died Nov. 2, 2013. He was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pa.
Dr. Troy was a Distinguished Professor at Rutgers University for 53 years and chairman of the Economics Department for 17 years. He won two Fulbright Scholarships to research the economics of labor unions in the United Kingdom, moving his family there for a year in 1962 and 1973. He retired in 2010.
He was the author of three books, The Almanac of Business and Industrial Financial Ratios, Beyond Unions and Collective Bargaining, and The Twilight of the Old Unionism.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, where he fought in the Battle of the Bulge and was the recipient of the Meritorious Service Medal, the European African Mideastern Campaign Medal, and the Medal of Freedom.
He entered Pennsylvania State University on the GI Bill, graduating Phi Beta Kappa. He attended graduate school at Columbia University, where he earned his PhD in Economics.
He was quoted often in The New York Times by Steven Greenhouse over the years, most recently, at the age of 88, in about the decline in union membership in the United States and worldwide.
He was a member of many civic, medical and religious organizations, including Beth Israel Synagogue.
He is survived by his daughter, Suzannah Beth Troy of Brooklyn; his son, Alexander (Dale) of Greenwich, Conn.; three grandchildren; and his former wife, Sandra Troy.
Services were held Nov. 3 with arrangements by Rosenberg Funeral Chapel Inc., Wilkes-Barre.
