Edward Shulman

Edward Shulman, 95, of Delray Beach, Fla., died May 30, 2012. He was a longtime Essex County resident before retiring to Delray Beach.

A successful businessman, Mr. Shulman founded Lee Clothiers, a company named in honor of his first wife, the former Leady (Lee) Brown.

He attended Irvington public schools, followed by the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, where he was a member of the rowing crew and Kappa Nu fraternity.

During World War II he served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy in charge of purchasing in Nicaragua. A fluent Spanish speaker, he dealt with the highest-ranking officials of the Nicaraguan government.

He was also an amateur artist, singer, and performer who played leading roles, both musical and dramatic, from the time he was a schoolboy in Irvington until well into his retirement. He produced a large collection of still life and landscape paintings, many of which he circulated among his family and friends in the form of greeting cards. He performed during his retirement with the Bon Aire Singers and the Hurricane Harmonizers, and he was an assistant at The Caring Kitchen in Delray Beach, where he insisted on serving even during weather emergencies.

Predeceased by his first wife, Lee, and his second wife, Belle (Helman), he is survived by his son, Bob of Cragsmoor, NY, and Brooklyn, and two stepchildren, Diana Kay and Jim Helman.
